On makeads, we treat crawlability as an operations task, not a one-time setup. If bots cannot fetch your canonical URL and sitemap reliably, indexing quality drops no matter how strong your content is.
The symptom pattern that confuses most teams
A common pattern is: canonical pages are crawled recently, but redirected variants (like http or www versions) show older crawl dates. That does not automatically mean there is a crawl failure.
Checks we run before changing anything
- Confirm canonical homepage returns 200.
- Confirm sitemap.xml and robots.txt return 200.
- Confirm non-canonical variants return stable 301 redirects to the canonical URL.
- Re-check key paths with a Googlebot user-agent.
Cloudflare settings that matter most
- Keep Bot Fight Mode off for crawl-critical marketing sites when it causes bot challenges.
- Avoid challenging `/`, `/sitemap.xml`, and `/robots.txt`.
- Use explicit redirect rules so canonicalization stays predictable.
How we interpret Search Console timing
Search Console updates are not instant. In practice, sitemap status often refreshes within 24-72 hours, while canonical and indexing signals can take several days to settle. We only escalate when canonical URLs also stall or start returning errors/challenges.
